The Franke 03 is the cartridge employed as standard in Franke's new range of 'quick change' Franke FilterFlow systems. This advanced cartridge employs an outer shell of high-quality micro-porous ceramic and a hi-tech extruded carbon core, to provide superior performance across a wide range of possible waterborne contaminants, including sediment, harmful bacteria, parasites, cysts, chlorine, and lead.

Your Franke 03 cartridge should be replaced every 6 months. Please bear in mind, however, that the period between cartridge replacements is not guaranteed. Everyone's water is different and in areas, with a higher level of turbidity (dirt, sediment, etc.) it is possible that more frequent cartridge changes will be required.

What will the Franke 03 cartridge remove?
The Franke 03 is a broad spectrum filter designed to be effective against a wide range of possible waterborne contaminants including harmful bacteria, parasites, cysts, chlorine and lead.
How often should I be changing my Franke 03 cartridge?
We recommend that Franke 03 cartridges are changed every 6 months. Please bear in mind, however, that the period between cartridge replacements is not guaranteed. My kettle seems to be constantly full of limescale and we often notice a filmy substance on the top of tea and coffee, too. Is it possible to switch to a filter cartridge that will stop this?
Yes and no! 50% of UK households are in hard water areas - but the actual hardness of water still varies dramatically from home to home. Franke standard filter cartridges do not tackle hard water because as a product that is intended to deliver healthy, great-tasting drinking water, calcium and magnesium (the causes of limescale) are regarded as essential!
However, we do recognise that - whilst harmless - the aesthetic appearance of scum on hot drinks is not desirable. As such, you might wish to try switching to a Franke 06 filter cartridge. The Franke 06 combines granular activated carbon with a de-alk resin to tackle chemicals such as chlorine and heavy metals e.g. lead and it works to reduce the residues of limescale.
The flow of my filtered water seems to becoming slower and slower - what could be the problem?
Reduction in flow is a clear indication that the cartridge is clogging with contaminants. Normally this is a gradual process towards the change date of the cartridge. Sudden and dramatic reduction in flow is invariably due to higher than normal levels of contamination commonly caused by plumbing residues, particularly in newhomes or when major plumbing work is carried out in the vicinity. In the case of the Franke 03 in the event the cartridge becomes clogged prematurely you may remove it and clean it to temporarily restore the flow. To do this, simply remove the cartridge (follow our step-by-step cartridge change instructions), hold it under cold running water and abrade the ceramic with a non-soapy abrasive pad. (Scotchbrite or equivalent)
I am having to clean my Franke 03 cartridge too frequently between cartridge changes. What can I try?
Some areas do have low flow and/or a higher level of turbidity (particle contamination) and so you might wish to switch your FilterFlow tap's standard cartridge to a Franke 04 'high flow' carbon block cartridge. Manufactured from advanced carbon block with a pre-filter wrap these cartridges offer a superb alternative to the Franke 03 if higher flow is the priority.
I've just replaced my cartridge and the filtered flow of water seems in 'milky' in appearance.
Don't worry, this is very common, particularly with a new cartridge. A significant amount of air is trapped in the complex microporous structure of the ceramic and carbon block of new cartridges. The milky appearance you have noticed is simply millions of tiny air bubbles in the water. Allowing the water to stand in the glass for a few minutes and the bubbles will soon disperse. Following a cartridge change, it is not unusual for the filtered water to appear milky for some time, up to three weeks, before it completely disappears.
I think I can see miniscule black specks in my filtered water - what are they?
No need for concern - especially if you have recently changed your filter cartridge. The black specks are tiny, harmless particles of carbon that are residues from the manufacturing process. Flush them through by allowing your tap's filtered flow of water to run for a few minutes until they disappear.

What should I do with used filter cartridges?
The ceramic and carbon that constitute the majority of the materials used in the construction of the cartridges are naturally occuring materials and are bio-degradable. You can dispose of old cartridges in your normal household waste. Alternatively, we welcome the return of spent cartridges so that we can recycle them responsibly. Please allow used cartridges to dry naturally before returning them to us in your new cartridge's packaging.
